ATM Azharul Islam, the then assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, was released from Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on Wednesday morning.
After necessary formalities, around 9:30 AM, he walked out of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) where he had been undergoing treatment for the last few months. His party leaders and activists welcomed him at the BMU gate, DIG Prisons Md Jahangir Kabir confirmed the matter to media.
After release, ATM Azharul went to Shahbagh directly to join a public rally there.
A huge crowd was found at Shahbagh in the morning as the party leaders and supporters were waiting for their leader.
Vehicular movement in the area came to a standstill.
On December 30, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Azharul to death for charges 2, 3, and 4. He was also sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment for charge 5 (abduction, torture, and rape), and five years for charge 6 (torture)
