Govt eyes tourism boost to 7% of GDP: State Minister

The government is targeting a significant expansion of Bangladesh’s tourism sector, aiming to raise its contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) to around 6-7% from the current 2-3%, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat said on Saturday.

He made the remarks while addressing the “Beautiful Bangladesh Run 2026 (Season-2)” at Hatirjheel, where he attended as chief guest and distributed prizes among the winners.

The minister said the government is focusing on attracting foreign investment and developing world-class tourism infrastructure to unlock the sector’s potential. Key destinations such as Cox’s Bazar, Kuakata and Sylhet are being prioritised for large-scale development.

He added that discussions are ongoing with international developers, including Emaar Properties, to implement projects under public-private partnership (PPP) models.

Highlighting the broader impact of tourism, Millat said initiatives that combine public engagement and awareness-such as marathon events-can play a role in promoting Bangladesh globally while encouraging a healthier society.

The run, organised by the Aviation and Tourism Journalists Forum of Bangladesh, attracted nearly 1,000 participants and featured a 7.5km competitive race and a 2km fun run starting from Police Plaza point in Dhaka.

The event’s title sponsor was Rhythm Group. Its Deputy Managing Director Abir Hossain said the strong turnout reflected growing public awareness of fitness and wellness, adding that there are plans to expand the event internationally.

ATJFB President Tanzim Anwar described the run as a flagship initiative to promote tourism and said organisers are planning to hold a similar event at Cox’s Bazar Marine Drive next year.

In the 2km race, Mahibur Rahman finished first in the men’s category, followed by Md Animul Hasan and FA Selim. In the women’s category, Nur-e-Saba secured first place, followed by Subhana Mahdia Siddiqui and Parvin Mitu.

In the 7.5km race, Md Elahi Sardar won the men’s category, followed by Ashraful Alam and Palash Sheikh. Hamida Akter Jeba topped the women’s category, with Sadia Shawlin Sigma and Teresa Kochi finishing second and third respectively.

Winners received trophies, air tickets to various destinations and raffle prizes, organisers said.
