The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) has warned that short-term flood conditions are likely to occur in some districts of the north and north-east within the next 24 to 72 hours. At the same time, the agency has also said that the river water may reach the warning level in some districts of the Brahmaputra-Yamuna basin between July 20 and 22.
This information was provided in the main basin and zone-based river conditions and forecasts signed by Nusrat Jahan Jerin, Assistant Engineer of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) on Saturday (July 18).
The forecast says that the Kushiyara river is currently flowing above the danger level at Fenchuganj in Sylhet and Markuli stations in Sunamganj. The low pressure area located over western Gangetic West Bengal and adjacent areas has shifted northwestwards and is likely to gradually weaken in the next 24 hours.
The forecast also says that the water level of Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers is likely to increase in the next three days. The water level in some places of these rivers may cross the danger level in the next 24 to 48 hours. This may cause short-term flood situation in some low-lying areas of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha and Kurigram districts.
Apart from this, the water level of Surma-Kushiyara rivers may also increase in the next three days. The water level in some places of these rivers may cross the danger level within the next 72 hours. As a result, short-term floods may occur in some places in the low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts or the existing flood situation may remain stable.
On the other hand, the water level of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganga-Padma rivers may increase in the next five days. As a result, the water level of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna may reach the alert level in some places of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra, Sirajganj and Tangail districts between July 20 and 22, and some low-lying areas adjacent to the rivers may be flooded.
The Flood Forecasting Center further said that higher than normal tides may continue in various rivers including the coastal Kirtankhola, Lower-Meghna, Pashur, Ichamati, Karnaphuli, Little Feni and Noakhali canals of Barisal, Khulna and Chittagong divisions for the next one day.
