The new minimum wage structure for readymade garment (RMG) sector workers will be finalized by December and will take effect from January next year, following an agreement reached between factory owners and worker representatives.
The announcement was made at a press conference following the inaugural meeting of the newly formed Minimum Wage Board at its Segunbagicha office in the capital on Wednesday (November 4).
Presided over by board Chairman and Senior District Judge Sheikh Ashfaqur Rahman, the meeting convened at 11:00 AM to establish the framework for recommending a revised minimum wage scale for RMG workers and staff.
During the session, representatives from both employers and labor groups reached a consensus on completing the wage recommendation process within December to ensure implementation starting in January.
The government reconstituted the general minimum wage board and set up a dedicated wage board for the garment industry on November 1 in response to widespread labor agitation for higher pay.
Meanwhile, garment workers have continued demonstrations across various locations in the capital and surrounding industrial zones, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000. Clashes between protesting workers and police personnel were reported in parts of Dhaka and Gazipur on Wednesday amid road blockades.
