Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo announced his retirement from international football on Thursday at the age of 41, drawing the curtains on a storied 23-year international career.
The five-time Ballon d’Or recipient departs international duty as the world’s all-time record holder for both appearances and goals in men’s international football, having registered 146 goals across 234 matches for Portugal.
Ronaldo confirmed the decision via a video shared on his personal Instagram account, reflecting on a journey that began with his senior debut in August 2003.
“To the Portuguese people, the day has come for me to hand back the number seven shirt of our national team,” Ronaldo stated alongside a montage of his career highlights. “I never felt it belonged to me alone, but for 23 years I had the privilege and the responsibility of wearing it, defending it, and carrying it with me into stadiums all around the world.”
The announcement follows a turbulent period with the national squad. Ronaldo had a fallout with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus last month after Jesus left him out of a UEFA Nations League fixture. The veteran forward subsequently departed the training camp, resulting in a 30-day team suspension.
Despite subsequent speculation that he might return to the international setup, Ronaldo decided to officially conclude his tenure.
“Today the time has come to pass it on to the future. It was not an easy decision, because some decisions are not made with the mind alone—they are also made with the heart,” he added.
The pinnacle of Ronaldo’s international career came at the 2016 European Championship in France, where he led Portugal to their historic first major continental title. In his final World Cup campaign earlier this year across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Ronaldo netted three goals before Portugal exited in the Round of 16 against eventual champions Spain.
A legendary journey comes to an end
Cristiano Ronaldo bids farewell to Portugal after a 23-year international career that redefined global football records and delivered the country’s first major pieces of silverware.
Making his senior debut as an 18-year-old against Kazakhstan in August 2003, Ronaldo went on to earn a world-record 234 caps and score 146 goals, the highest tally ever recorded in men’s international football.
He surpassed the previous record of 109 goals set by Iran’s Ali Daei in September 2021 before extending his lead into uncharted territory.
His international pinnacle came in 2016, when he captained Portugal to their maiden European Championship title in France.
Despite being forced off the pitch with a knee injury in the first half of the final, he famously rallied his teammates from the dugout to seal a 1-0 extra-time win against the hosts. Three years later, he led the team to the inaugural UEFA Nations League crown in 2019 on home soil.
Ronaldo also stands as the only male player to feature in six European Championships (2004 to 2024), holding the tournament’s all-time record with 14 goals.
Across six FIFA World Cup tournaments between 2006 and 2026, he made history by scoring in six separate editions, tallying 11 World Cup goals in total.
With 10 international hat-tricks to his name—the most by any player on the international stage—Ronaldo concludes his tenure having transformed Portugal into a title-winning force in world football.
