Two ordered death, one life in prison for murder in Sylhet

23A court in Sylhet has sentenced two persons to death and another to life imprisonment for the murder of Suruj Ali at South Surma Upazila in 2009.

The Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Iftekhar Bin Aziz pronounced the verdict on Monday.

Ten others were acquitted. The two who received death sentences are Fazar Ali and Bashir Ali. Both were present in court on Monday.

The other convict, Faizul Ali, given life imprisonment, has been also fined Tk 50,000. His jail term would be extended by a year if he failed to pay up.

According to the case details, there was a clash over land in South Surma Upazila’s Khatira Village on Mar 2, 2009 between supporters of Babul Ali and Fazar Ali.

Babul’s brother Suruj Ali died on the spot during the clash.

Police pressed charges against 14 for the murder. One of the accused died during the trial, said Public Prosecutor Masuk Ali.
