Labour’s candidate for Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, was today joined by Labour’s
Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna MP as he launched his key mayoral policies that will “benefit every corner of the borough.”
Among an ambitious list of pledges, Labour’s candidate promised he would build the borough’s first new council homes in years, crack down on anti-social behaviour and restore
the public’s trust in the Council. There were also measures to clean up the borough’s streets,
create new jobs and apprenticeships for young people and extend the current Free School Meals programme to include all primary school children.
The policy priorities were launched after Biggs and Chuka Umunna MP met local traders at Chrisp Street market. Biggs said that the pledges were his “contract with residents” and
would represent his key policy focus as Mayor, building on the detailed plan for the borough
he set out in last year’s mayoral election. He promised that as Mayor he would be focused on moving the borough on from the bad headlines and controversies of the past, focusing instead
on the things that matter most to local residents.
Labour’s candidate for Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, said:
“On 11 June Tower Hamlets has a chance to reject the division and controversy of the past and to elect a Mayor whose sole focus will be on the things that matter most to local people.
“I will be a Mayor who knuckles down and gets the job done, building affordable homes we desperately need, cleaning up our streets and clamping down on anti-social behaviour.
“These pledges are my contract with residents. They are an ambitious plan which will benefit every corner of the borough. It’s about getting our borough back on track – that is what I want
Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna MP said: “I have a huge amount of respect for what John Biggs has achieved and he has the experience
and vision to deliver the change Tower Hamlets so desperately needs. No one knows Tower Hamlets better than John Biggs, and these pledges show he will be a Mayor that unites the
community again, on the side of everyone in the borough.”
Labour MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, Rushanara Ali said:
“After years of Government cuts and council mismanagement, the residents of Tower
Hamlets deserve a Mayor who will focus on moving our borough forward and improving the services we all rely upon. John Biggs is the person to do that. “He not only has the experience and integrity to restore faith in the council, but an ambitious
plan for the future which will mean new jobs, more affordable housing and local people benefiting from all the opportunity our area can provide.”
Labour MP for Poplar and Limehouse, Jim Fitzpatrick said: “Throughout his career, John has worked to tackle inequality and injustice and stood up for
communities across the East End. He has set out a plan at this election that puts fairness at its
heart and focuses on the key issues families face in our borough.
“Only under John’s leadership, can we move on from the failures of the previous regime and
work for a better future for all parts of Tower Hamlets.”
