Rivers in Sylhet flow above danger level, flood situation goes worsening

Floods have occurred in Sylhet again.  Due to the heavy rains of the last few days and the hill slopes coming down from the upstream, the water of all the rivers in the district is flowing above the danger level.

According to Water Development Board, at 9 am on Tuesday (June 18), all the rivers, including Surma, Kushiara, Sari, Sarigoine, Dhalai and Lovachhara, are flowing above the danger level.  There is a fear of water entering the river bank area.

Meanwhile, several upazilas, including bordering upazilas, have been flooded due to rainfall and upwelling.  Several families of Goainghat, Companyganj, Osmaninagar, Balaganj and Biyanibazar upazilas have already stayed in shelters.

In addition, many people of different upazilas of the district have been trapped in water.  However, the rainfall in Sylhet city has started to decrease as the rainfall has reduced a little since Monday afternoon.

According to BWDB Sylhet, Surma river water is flowing 133 cm above the danger level at Kanaighat point at 9 am on Tuesday.  Earlier at 6 am, it was flowing over 113 cm of the danger level.

Kushiara river water is flowing 15 cm above the danger level at Amalsheed Point at 9 am on Tuesday.  Earlier, it was 1 cm above the danger level at 6 am.

The water of Sari River is flowing 35 cm above the danger level  at Sarighat Point at 9 am.  Earlier, it was 40 cm above the danger level at 6 am.

Besides, the waters of all the rivers including Sari, Sarigoain, Lovachhara and Dhalai are flowing over the level.

According to the Meteorological Department, Sylhet has received 153 mm of rain in 24 hours.  The rainfall was 44 mm in three hours from 6 am to 9 am on Tuesday.

On the other hand, Cherrapunji in India has recorded 395 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, according to the country’s Meteorological Office.

According to the district administration, extensive preparations have been made by the administration in the flood situation caused by heavy rain and upstream.  In the meantime, sacrificial animal meat, dry food and Eid material have been distributed among water-logged people in different upazilas.
