BNP gains momentum in Sunamganj-1 under fresh leadership

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is witnessing renewed organizational energy in Sunamganj-1 (comprising Dharmapasha, Jamalganj, Tahirpur, and Moddhanagar upazilas) as grassroots restructuring intensifies under new leadership.

At the heart of this resurgence is Kamaruzzaman Kamrul, a member of the BNP’s district convening committee, former district organizing secretary, and ex-upazila chairman. Popular among youth and seen as a frontrunner for party nomination, Kamrul is leading a campaign to revitalize the BNP’s presence across all levels—from upazila to ward.

According to party insiders, Kamrul played a pivotal role in keeping the party structure intact in the haor region even during periods of political repression, arrests, and legal persecution. His continued presence on the streets and unwavering support for activists have made him a symbol of resilience and leadership.

Under his guidance, over a hundred public meetings and courtyard discussions have already taken place across the four upazilas of Sunamganj-1. These events have served as platforms to promote BNP’s 31-point reform agenda outlined by acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

Notably, most wards in Madhyanagar upazila have completed grassroots engagements, with strong participation from local activists. In Dharmapasha, a recent rally held amid heavy rain drew thousands, signaling BNP’s growing strength at the field level.

“Despite 16 years of political oppression, Kamrul Bhai has kept us inspired and the organization alive,” said Abdul Haque, joint convenor of Dharmapasha BNP.

Abul Bashar, joint convenor of Madhyanagar BNP, noted, “Through courtyard meetings and rallies, our organization has become more structured and energized under Kamrul’s leadership.”

Tahirpur BNP’s joint convenor Mehedi Hasan Uzzal added, “From student politics to today’s leadership, Kamrul Bhai has become the face of BNP in Sunamganj-1. His role has strengthened our base in Tahirpur.”

Speaking to the press, Kamrul reaffirmed his commitment to both his community and the party: “Since my student days, I’ve stood with the hardworking people of the haor. I remained on the front lines during the party’s toughest times. Now, I’m going door to door to spread Tarique Rahman’s reform message and build support for the sheaf of paddy. Organizational revival is my top priority.”

Party leaders and supporters view Kamrul as the most dependable figure to solidify BNP’s foundation in Sunamganj-1, believing his leadership is transforming the region’s BNP base into a more active and combative force.
