The government has issued the “Tanguar and Hakaluki Haor Protection Order” to safeguard these ecologically rich areas from environmental degradation.
The order, promulgated on Monday, was enacted under Sections 22 and 27 of the Bangladesh Water Act, 2013, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to fulfilling its international environmental obligations, including those under the Ramsar Convention and the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Tanguar Haor in Sunamganj and Hakaluki Haor, spanning Moulvibazar and Habiganj, are among Bangladesh’s largest inland wetlands.

These seasonal haors serve as critical habitats for migratory birds, fish breeding grounds, and natural water reservoirs that support agriculture and flood regulation.
However, increasing threats such as unregulated tourism, illegal fishing, sand extraction, deforestation, chemical runoff, and waste dumping have placed immense pressure on their fragile ecosystems.
To address these challenges, the new protection order establishes strict regulations across multiple sectors.
