
Joint forces today arrested five people and recovered a large batch of illegal arms, ammunition and equipment used for criminal activities during a drive in Osmaninagar upazila of Sylhet.
The arrested persons were identified as Gias Uddin, son of late Yusuf Ullah of Chiladia village in Jagannathpur upazila, Md Habu Mia, son of late Geda Mia of Rifatpur village under Nabiganj upazila, Md Mojibur Rahman, son of late Abdul Gafur of Sikandarpur village in Osmaninagar, Sayed Ahmed, son of Joynal Abedin of the same village, and Naimur Rahman, son of Md Faruk Ahmed of Bhadergaon village under Tajpur Union.
Based on secret information, joint forces conducted the drive and illegal firearms.
Lieutenant Mohammad Tanjil, commander of the Osmaninagar camp of the Army led the drive with support from an army patrol team and a team from Osmaninagar police station.
During the operation, a raid was carried out at the residence of Md Afizur Rahman at Sikandarpur village under Umarpur Union of the upazila.
The joint forces raid recovered two single-barrel guns, 10 rounds of ammunition and various equipment used in criminal activities from the house.
At that time, five suspected associates were arrested from the spot.
Later, the recovered arms, ammunition and other seized items, along with the five arrestees, were handed over to Osmaninagar police station.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Osmaninagar Police Station Murshidul Alam Bhuiyan said he was informed about the arrest.
Necessary legal steps have been taken in this regard, he added.
