PM Tarique starts Sylhet trip with shrine visits and public rally

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has arrived in Sylhet on his first visit to the region since assuming office.

Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon said he landed in Sylhet at 10am on Saturday on a private jet.

He was received at Osmani International Airport by Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, Labour and Expatriates’ Welfare Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury, Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Quiyum Choudhury, Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Mashiur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner Sarwoer Alam and other senior officials.

Rumon had earlier said the premier left his Gulshan residence at 9:15am and travelled to Sylhet by air with his wife Zubaida Rahman.

Sylhet is also the home district of his wife, giving the visit added personal significance. The BNP chief had also kicked off his election campaign in Sylhet on 21 Jan.

From the airport, Tarique will directly go to the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA). After paying respects there, he is due to travel to Khadimnagar to visit the shrine of Hazrat Shah Paran (RA).

He is scheduled to return to Dhaka at night after attending several programmes, including development events and the launch of the “Notun Kuri Sports” initiative.

At 11am, he is due to lay the foundation stone of a Sylhet City Corporation project at Chandni Ghat aimed at easing waterlogging, before inaugurating the re-excavation of the Baisha River in Kashipur Union at noon.

After Zuhr prayers and lunch at the Circuit House, he will launch “Notun Kuri Sports-2026” at 3pm at Sylhet Stadium, a programme aimed at identifying young talent from across the country.

At 5pm, he is scheduled to address a party rally at the Shilpakala Academy.
