Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging irregularities in the voter-list revision process.

The petition was filed on Monday (October 12), following a march towards the Supreme Court by Gandhi and leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc, who are seeking action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral irregularities.

The move came after Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined a request by Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for a meeting, saying the issues were already pending before the court and should be raised through formal judicial proceedings.

Gandhi and other opposition leaders have alleged that the voter-list revision process threatens eligible citizens’ voting rights. The Election Commission has maintained that the exercise aims to remove duplicate and ineligible names from electoral rolls.

Further details of the petition’s grounds and requested relief were awaited.
