The long absence of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury from office has created a serious disruption in the activities, especially those related to the important development projects. All the complexities arise the city father upon being the highest authority to take decisions on the important issues and to put his signature for payment of bills to the contractors and salaries of the corporation staff. Meanwhile, many policymaking decisions cannot be taken for there not being held monthly general meetings of the ward councilors with the mayor in the chair.
Arif took over the charge of 4th SCC elections held on June 15, 205. It is learnt that Arif, also member of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) central committe, former president of Sylhet city unit.
Chief Executive Officer of SCC Enamul Habib admitted that for the absence of the mayor, the entire administration of the corporation has lost chain of command and attendance of the officials and employees has become thinner than usual.
‘Of course, we are trying our best to overcome the problems, he added.’ SCC sources that said that many contractors in their sharp reaction have already discontinued development works due to nonpayment of bills.
