Popularly known as Mother of all living & martyred freedom fighters Shahid Janani Jahanara Imam who led the movement to seek justice for the victims of Bangladesh War in 1992 has finally materialised by the formation of International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in 2010 by Sheikh Hasina’s alliance
government said guests at UK Nirmul Committee’s 24th anniversary.
The anniversary event was held on Tuesday, 19 January at the Montefiore Centre, East London. Speakers remembered and acknowledged Shahid Janani affectionately along with Begum Sufia Kamal and Sheikh Hasina for their contribution in ensuring justice for Bangladesh War victims of 1971. They
said as a result of the long campaign Bangladesh and the Bengali nation is now witnessing the trials of war criminals and has already seen the
completion of twenty one accused of war crimes. But they warned against the ongoing conspiracy by Jamaat both in Bangladesh and here in the UK to halt the tribunal.
Opening speech was made by Executive Member Shah Tufayel and Treasurer Shah Mustafijur Rahman Belal. Chief Guest in attendance was Md Mohammad Monirul Islam Kabir, First Secretary at the Bangladesh High Commission in London. Other guests were UK Awami League’s President Sultan Shariff, Nirmul
Committee’s Vice President Syed Enamul Islam, Research Secretary Matiar Chowdhury and many pro-liberation activists including freedom fighters.
The event was conducted jointly by Secretary Syed Anas Pasha, Asst Secretary Jamal Ahmed Khan and the cultural function was introduced by Mojibul Haq Moni. Shahnaz Shumi, Bapita, Mojibul Haq Moni, Organising Secretary Ruby Haq, young artist Nahiyan Pasha, Rafa Haq and child artist Anvita sang
patriotic songs.
The event was brought to an end by Nirmul Committee’s Acting President Ishaque Kajol followed by cutting of cake and serving of traditional Bengali sweet and snacks.
