Responding to the Autumn Statement today, Apsana Begum, MP for Poplar and Limehouse said,
“Today the Tories have chosen to condemn millions of key workers in the public sector – who got us through the pandemic – to years of pay misery whilst awarding bankers unlimited bonuses.
“They have chosen to scapegoat people on universal credit whilst protecting the super-rich. They are choosing the increase taxes working people whilst refusing to fairly tax the wealthy.
“And they are choosing to put our future at risk by escalating austerity again despite knowing the harm and suffering that this will cause – especially for those already oppressed and marginalised.
“Twelve years of Tory governments have decimated growth and slashed living standards.
“Now they have crashed the economy they’re determined to make people in my constituency, which suffers from one of the highest rates of child poverty already, and all around the country, pay.
“We cannot let them continue to drive more and more into desperate poverty so they can prioritise profit.”
