Suranjit’s wife files complaint with EC seeking OC’s withdrawal

Seeking withdrawal of Dirai Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Ikhtiar Uddin, Sunamganj-2 (Dirai-Shalla) constituency’s MP and independent candidate Dr Joya Sengupta submitted a complaint to the Election Commission (EC).

She is contesting the 12th Jatiya Sangsad election with ‘Sickle’ symbol.

In her complaint submitted to the EC on Thursday (December 28), she mentioned that taking over the charge in Dirai Police Station after being transferred recently, OC Ikhtiar Uddin has been threatening and intimidating the voters and workers of ‘Sickle’ in various ways.

He also threatening voters to arrest them accusing in police assault case.

Calling some voters to the police station, OC Ikhtiar Uddin are seeking votes for rival candidate Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun. He is also introducing himself as the relative of the candidate. At the same time, he is threatening some voters not to go to the polling station on election day. As a result, voting in Sunamganj-2 (Dirai-Shalla) constituency is unlikely to be held in festive mood and the presence of voters is likely to decline.

It was also stated in the complaint that the local journalists had refrained from election reporting due to such behaviour of the OC.

Contacted, the Dirai Police Station OC said that the allegations brought against him were baseless. Nothing is being done in favour or disfavour of any candidate beyond legal process.

Denying the allegation to seek votes for Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mahmud, the OC said, “I am not working in favour of anyone else. Police are working under the jurisdiction of law to ensure a free and fair election.”

Dr Joya Sengupta is the wife of late elderly Awami League leader and former minister Suranjit Sengupta. She is contesting in Sunamganj-2 (Dirai-Shalla) constituency after the death of late national leader.

However, Joya Sengupta did not receive the ‘Boat’ election symbol. Awami League has given nomination to Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mahmud, younger brother of Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, in this constituency.
