Reigning Spanish champions Barcelona wrapped up their pre-season with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Italian side Como in the Joan Gamper Trophy on Sunday, marking a positive turn in relations with goalkeeper Marc-André Ter Stegen.
The match, held at the Johan Cruyff Stadium while renovation work continues at the Camp Nou, also saw England forward Marcus Rashford make his debut following a recent loan move from Manchester United. Rashford came on as a substitute, assisting Raphinha’s goal but later missing a clear chance to score.
Barcelona’s goals came from a double apiece by Fermín López and Lamine Yamal, with Raphinha adding one in the first half, as Hansi Flick’s side showed promising form ahead of their La Liga opener against Mallorca next Saturday.
Before kick-off, Ter Stegen addressed the crowd in his role as captain, just days after a dispute with the club over the management of his back injury. “I think it was important to resolve the issue between the club and me, and now it’s time to look forward,” said the 33-year-old, who was reinstated as captain on Friday.
“We’re going to fight again for all the trophies and we hope that with your help we can win all the titles possible,” he added, signaling a renewed unity as Barcelona aim to defend their league title.
